Lake Buena Vista, Florida - It's hard to believe that it has been almost 50 years since Walt Disney World welcomed its first guest on October 1, 1971. Since then, millions of visitors and generations of children have been transported by the park's wonder and evolution.
While COVID-19 has meant a change in the traditional Disney visit, the resort is moving full speed ahead on a lavish 18 month long party to mark the 50th anniversary of the "most magical place on earth". The celebratory event will feature new experiences at the resort’s four theme parks and beyond, where shimmering "EARidescent" décor will appear as if by magic on the park's most iconic symbols.
Shining at the center of it all will be Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom Park,
with new gold bunting, sparkling golden embellishments and other new enhancements, including a 50th anniversary crest.
The "Earidescent" theme continues at Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom illuminating each park's symbolic icon.
At Epcot, new lights will shine across the reflective panels of Spaceship Earth,
connecting to one another in a symbol resembling stars in a nighttime sky.
The Hollywood Tower Hotel at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be awash in a brilliance
evoking the golden age of imagination and adventure, while Animal Kingdom's Tree of Life will emit a warm glow as fireflies are projected on the tree.
Normally, lavish firework displays and new park parades accompany Disney celebrations, but COVID-19 has forced the company to temporarily cancel fireworks and change the way parades are presented to avoid large crowds.
In the coming months, Disney has promised more details on the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary celebrations. WDW is likely waiting for health restrictions to ease in order to reveal the full extent of the golden anniversary plans. Stay tuned for all the details closer to kick-off in October.
